Jack Rodwell, England 300
JACK RODWELL has revealed how a summer pep talk with Everton chairman Bill Kenwright proved the springboard for his England breakthrough – as he beamed with pride after the “biggest game” of his career.
Rodwell made his debut appearance for Fabio Capello’s senior side when emerging as a 57th-minute substitute in Saturday’s 1-0 friendly win over World Cup holders Spain at Wembley.
The 20-year-old was later included by the England coach in a handful of youngsters who will have an important part to play in the European Championships next summer.
Rodwell’s call-up was reward for series of impressive performances having claimed a regular role in Everton’s central midfield following the deadline day departure of Mikel Arteta to Arsenal.
And the Birkdale-born player has told how a few words from Kenwright provided encouragement to step up his game this season.
“I had a chat with a lot of people, and this season was always going to be a big season for me,” said Rodwell. “I've had the backing of all the people at Everton so would like to thank them.
“The chairman told me ‘be confident, play your game and hopefully you'll get a regular role’.
“He said to keep playing my natural game and good things will happen.”
After Saturday’s match, Capello intimated Rodwell could have a part to play in the Euro 2012 finals in Poland and Ukraine next June.
“For me, the most important thing you saw is the performance of Rodwell when he played, the performance of (Phil) Jones, the performance of (Danny) Welbeck,” said the Italian. “These are really good young players.
“These players will be very important for the next Euros because you saw they played without fear and with personality on the pitch. Physically and technically I can see they are good to play with the seniors.”
Rodwell, who is expected to be given a first start in tomorrow’s Wembley friendly against Sweden, said: “It’s great for him to say something like that but it’s a long, long way away and there is a long season between then and now. I’ve just got to keep focused and keep working hard.”
Like Manchester United pair Jones and Welbeck, Rodwell has progressed from the under-21 squad.
