Jack Rodwell 300
ENGLAND manager Fabio Capello has confirmed that Everton FC midfielder Jack Rodwell will earn a full international debut against Sweden tonight.
The 20-year-old Everton FC player had a first taste of senior action on Saturday night when he came on as a second half substitute against Spain at Wembley.
Rodwell won high praise from the Italian after the 1-0 win for a fearless cameo and will play from the start this evening when England face Erik Hamrén’s side.
A product of the Everton Academy, Rodwell will be one of eight changes in the capital this evening as Capello continues to use the back-to-back friendlies to experiment ahead of next summer’s European Championships.
Capello believes Rodwell can play a significant role for the national side in Poland and Ukraine as the national manager freshens up the England side.
Rodwell has been capped at every level of international football, apart from senior, but Capello is to grant the Birkdale-born player a chance to complete the collection.
“It is really important for me to know the value of some players from how they played against Spain and now Sweden,” said Capello.
“I am really happy because this experiment was positive (against Spain). The players who played, Rodwell, Jones, Welbeck, did really well. For these players it was a really important experience.
“I personally checked these players and I am really happy with the performance and the personality and the confidence they showed.
“It is difficult for young players to play with the confidence that they showed with Spain.
“If these players during the season will (continue to) improve, all these players will be ready to play with us with at the Euros.”
Rodwell’s Everton team-mate Phil Jagielka has been released from the England squad and so will not feature this evening at Wembley.
