DAVID MOYES admits Everton FC made life hard for themselves in securing a 2-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, but was full of praise for his side’s resilience and character.
Goals from Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines gave Everton FC an important victory over Mick McCarthy’s strugglers at Goodison Park on Saturday, and lifts them to 12th in the Premier League table.
Moyes was a relieved man afterwards, but says his side need to be more clinical going forward.
“To be fair we’ve had a few games recently when Tim Howard hasn’t had much to do,” he said. “But we’ve not been clinical enough with our half-chances. We’ve not been clinical enough to win games or put games to bed and get our confidence up.
“There was an anxiety at times in the second half because we were so anxious to win, we knocked a few longer balls that we shouldn’t have but that happens when you’ve only won one in the last seven or eight weeks.
“I was delighted the players stuck at it and got the win, and it reminded me a little bit of my first year or two here. That was the way it felt.
“The boys were resilient, stuck at it and bits of it wasn’t always as nice as it should have been, but that will have to come after we get the wins.
“But we had chances at Newcastle, we had chances against Manchester United, even against Chelsea in the Carling Cup when we got knocked out we had chances, but I’m really looking for clean sheets more than anything at the moment – and to be fair we didn’t concede many chances today.”
Moyes admitted to some concerns surrounding the form of Tim Cahill, who has now gone 11 months without scoring. He did, however, urge the Australian’s team-mates to help take the goalscoring pressure from his shoulders.
