TIM CAHILL says he has no problem with “winning ugly” after Everton FC recorded a morale-boosting 2-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.
A late penalty from Leighton Baines gave David Moyes’ side all three points, after Phil Jagielka’s header had cancelled out Stephen Hunt’s own spot kick before half-time.
The win lifts the Toffees up to 12th in the Premier League table, and Cahill says points, rather than performances, are the order of the day at Goodison Park right now.
“If we play ugly and get results, then so be it,” said the Australian. “We knew we would have to do so because Wolves are tough opponents.
“But we have played some good football in the past few games and got nothing. Today we played a bit of football in patches, put some pressure on them and we got there in the end.
“The main thing for us is that we won. Sometimes you win ugly, sometimes you win nice. We are just happy with the three points.
“We’d have been absolutely gutted if we’d lost today, because we worked so hard. We’ve had six hard games before that, and a bit of pressure. But Bainesy gets a penalty in the end, and I’m just buzzing for the team and for the fans.”
Cahill himself has now gone 11 months without a goal. On Saturday was denied a first-half penalty when he tangled with Karl Henry, and then thwarted by Stephen Ward’s goal-line clearance after the break.
“It was a bit frustrating,” he revealed. “And we could hear the fans getting frustrated too.
“It’s hard. We were creating chances. Even the chance I missed, if it goes in it goes in. There is nothing you can do. You have to stand up and be counted. You understand (fans’) frustration in a way, but you have to try and lift yourself. And in the end they go away happy.
