THE world of football was in mourning last night for Wales manager and former Everton FC captain Gary Speed, who was found dead in his Cheshire home.

Police said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of the 42-year-old.

Unconfirmed sources say the father-of-two hanged himself at his house in Huntington, near Chester.

Everton manager David Moyes was with players and staff at Goodison Park when the news was broken by the Welsh FA.

Moyes said the club was “shattered and stunned” by the news as tributes flowed in from the sporting world and beyond.

Prime Minister David Cameron said he was “deeply saddened” while opposition leader Ed Miliband offered his sympathies.

At Anfield, Liverpool FC manager Kenny Dalglish released Welsh striker Craig Bellamy from the squad who held league leaders Manchester City to a 1-1 draw because Speed was “like a mentor” to him.

Dalglish added: “Gary Speed was a fantastic footballer, but more importantly he was a decent fella and there will be a lot of people saddened by what has happened.
