Everton FC striker Apostelos Vellios sets European Championship goal

EVERTON FC striker Apostelos Vellios could be handed the opportunity to star in next summer’s European Championships.

Everton striker Vellios continued his impressive role as an impact substitute by netting his third goal of the season in last Saturday’s 2-0 win at Bolton Wanderers.

Although having made only one Premier League start since arriving from Iraklis in January, the 19-year-old has caught the eye with a string of productive cameo outings.

And they have not gone unnoticed in his home country, with Greece under-21 coach George Georgiadis intimating continued improvement could force Vellios into the senior squad for the Euro 2012 finals in Poland and Ukraine, the draw for which takes place in Kiev on Friday.

“He has done very well for the U21s, he has scored some goals,” said Georgiadis. “He was injured for our last two games (last month) and we missed him.

“I see all the games to see how he is doing. I think he can improve some of his movement and getting into more positions to score goals, and his all-round team play as well.

“He is playing in England at the moment and that is good for him because it will help him improve those parts of his game.

“I think he can play at Euro 2012. He needs to keep doing well at Everton and Greece has a lot of good players, a lot of good strikers. But he has a chance.”
