NOT all footballers fit the lazy stereotype of being stupid, but sometimes they don’t help themselves.
What else to think when the 55-man shortlist for the FIFA FIFPro World XI 2011 was announced yesterday?
Voted for by 50,000 professional players across the world, the list includes the expected names such as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, David Silva, Xavi, Luis Suarez, Wayne Rooney and Gareth Bale.
Fair enough. But the other Englishmen on the list are Frank Lampard, John Terry, Ashley Cole and Rio Ferdinand. Obviously.
Even lamentable Chelsea centre-back David Luiz is in there, although that must only be on the basis of the volume and lustre of his elegantly-coiffured bonce.
Disconcertingly, only one player – striker Neymar of Santos – doesn’t play in Europe. So much for football being a world game.
