Landon Donovan 300
THE return of Landon Donovan can only be a good thing for Everton FC.
I was surprised by how well he did the last time he was at EFC two years ago. Through ignorance more than anything else, I’d not seen much MLS and had no idea how good the standard is. But he did really, really well.
What I didn’t appreciate was how much of a good player he is in terms of bringing other players into the game.
Donovan was thrown in straight away when he first arrived, and it looked like he had been at the club for ages.
With Ross Barkley signing a new contract last week, all David Moyes needs now is to bring in another type of midfielder or a centre-forward during the January transfer window.
It wasn’t all good news, though, with Everton’s Goodison troubles evident again in the draw with Norwich City.
The goal they conceded wasn’t great. Grant Holt is a whole-hearted, battering ram of a player, but to score in the manner he did was purely down to John Heitinga’s poor defending.
He got so close to him, and Heitinga was making the move rather than waiting for Holt to make a move and reacting to him. Holt then just rolled him and stuck it in.
I am a little bit surprised that Sylvain Distin hasn’t come back in, but knowing Moyes he is loathe to take players out if they are doing well. But Distin wouldn’t have been bullied by Holt, that’s for sure.
It was interesting that when Marouane Fellaini and Holt clashed, Holt gave him one back and Fellaini complained like hell. There are no doubt a lot of players who have been caught clumsily by Fellaini that were thinking ‘kettle, pot, black’.
During the game, Norwich didn’t fashion many chances, but when Everton concede it highlights how they are struggling at the other end. They seem in limbo at the moment.
