Louis Saha
DAVID MOYES has backed Louis Saha to enjoy another New Year revival as the striker faces a fight to secure his long-term Everton FC future.
Saha is approaching the final six months of his contract with Everton FC manager Moyes revealing no talks have yet been arranged to discuss a new deal.
The Frenchman has scored only twice during a difficult campaign hampered by injury and loss of form that saw him dropped from the matchday squad for the visit of Wigan Athletic in September.
However, Louis Saha has started eight of Everton FC’s last nine games and is expected to lead the line for this afternoon’s Premier League clash at Sunderland.
And Moyes hopes the 33-year-old can use a desire to safeguard his future to rediscover his shooting boots and fire the Goodison outfit back up the table.
“I expect Louis to come good in the second half of the season,” said the Everton FC manager.
“He not only needs to score goals for us, but if he wants to prove himself to anybody else then he needs to as well.
“I have always thought that players play better in the last year of their contract, because they are either proving it to their current employers or to any new suitors. That’s how I have seen it in my time.
“I am open minded on his future. We will not say too much about it now, and to be honest I have not given it an awful lot of thought.
“There is an incentive there, but there is an incentive for anybody. It is up to Louis to show he is up to it.”
Louis Saha’s veteran status means he is unlikely to be offered anything longer than a rolling 12-month deal.
“We tend to wait, with respect to the older boys, until later on before we offer contracts,” added Moyes.
“We don’t throw contracts at people just because of their age. But the boys know how it works.
“I think David Weir had a year’s contract for about four years in a row. If people perform, the chairman always rewards them here.”
