LET’S get this straight, Everton’s point at Sunderland was a good one – but they were extremely lucky to get it.
The ‘foul’ by Lee Cattermole on Leon Osman was never a foul in a million years. Osman kicked the floor and went over, and Howard Webb made the wrong decision.
Obviously the decision, and the fact it was Howard Webb, has been talked about an awful lot. I just think a referee has to be 100% sure when making a decision like that, and I can’t see how Howard could possibly have been certain there was contact.
Do you know what I think might have influenced his decision? The fact it was Cattermole involved.
We all know Cattermole likes a challenge and is reckless at times, and maybe Webb just saw that he was involved, saw Osman’s reaction and made his mind up there and then.
I don’t think Osman should be criticised for his reaction, personally. He will have been anticipating a challenge I’m sure, and basically what he has done is kick the floor. To him, that will have felt like being clipped.
What I thought was refreshing from the whole incident, though, was the way in which David Moyes and Martin O’Neill handled the incident.
David was unequivocal in admitting it wasn’t a penalty, and was very honest in his assessment.
