David Moyes: Everton FC fans must be realistic about Landon Donovan

DAVID MOYES has warned Everton FC supporters not to place too great a weight of expectation on the shoulders of Landon Donovan.

Donovan arrived at Finch Farm yesterday to start another short-term loan spell from MLS side LA Galaxy.

The United States international proved a major success during an initial temporary stay two years ago, scoring twice in 13 appearances.

The 29-year-old is ineligible for tomorrow’s Premier League visit to West Bromwich Albion but is in line to make his second debut at home to Bolton Wanderers on Wednesday.

And Moyes has called for realism amid anticipation the return of Donovan will kickstart a spluttering Everton campaign.

“It’s a two-month gamble, and people have to remember it is two months,” said the Everton manager. “To make such a big thing about it is wrong.

“He’ll be away again by the end of February, we just hope he can give us a boost for eight or 10 games or so.

“Maybe Landon might not be the same as he was. We aren’t totally sure yet. Hopefully it shouldn’t take too long for him to get up to speed.

“If people have big expectations then they are completely wrong. It’s two years later on. Let’s hope he does the same.

“Anyone thinking he will ride to the rescue on a white charger is wrong. We need realism.”

Nevertheless, Moyes believes Donovan – who has not played a competitive game since scoring the winner in the MLS Cup final more than a month ago – will undoubtedly bolster his attacking options, particularly on the flanks.
