Mark Lawrenson: Everton FC are treading water, but what else can they do?

OVER the weekend I saw that clip of Bill Kenwright being confronted by a group of Everton FC fans at the railings outside Goodison Park.

While the exchange was reasonably polite, it showed the strength of feeling some supporters have against the chairman.

They were asking where the money has gone from the Mikel Arteta deal. Well, as far as I’m aware, Kenwright himself hasn’t pocketed it.

Instead it’s gone to help keep the club in the Premier League, on wages and on other expenditure.

That’s just the way it is. Not just for Everton FC, but for many other clubs.

I was speaking to Bolton chairman Phil Garside on Saturday, who told me his club is £110million in debt.

Bolton have had nothing like the success Everton FC have enjoyed in the Premier League, and despite spending all that money it looks like they might drop out of the top flight this season.

I know at times I sound like an apologist for Kenwright and David Moyes, and there are those who want both out of the club, but I don’t think people at times understand how expensive it is to keep a club in the Premier League.

You have wages. Transfer fees. Other costs. It all adds up.

Crowds are down at Goodison, and Everton FC may well have to sell another player either this transfer window or next just to stop the banks from calling again.

It’s remarkable that Moyes can keep producing a team that finishes in the top 10. People might say the football is dull but there’s a great pragmatism behind that.
