Capped a record 92 times for Wales, ‘Big Nev’ went from being a bin man to arguably the best goalkeeper in the world. Signed from Bury for £150,000.

GARY STEVENS

Right-back 294 apps, 14 goals 1981-1988

Born: Barrow, March 27 1963

Hard-working overlapping full-back came through the ranks at Goodison and won 46 England caps. Joined the Anglo invasion at Rangers during the European ban and finished his career at Tranmere before becoming a physiopherapist.

JOHN BAILEY

Left-back 222 apps, 3 goals 1979-1985

Born: Liverpool, April 1 1957

The team’s joker – born on April Fools Day. Rejected by Everton as a youngster, he returned via Blackburn before going to Newcastle.

KEVIN RATCLIFFE

Centre-back 493 apps, 2 goals 1980-1991

Born: Mancot, Flintshire, November 12 1960

The pacy defender remains Everton’s most-decorated skipper. Capped 59 times for Wales, as a manager he steered Shrewsbury to a shock FA Cup over his former club in 2003.

DEREK MOUNTFIELD

Born: Liverpool, November 2 1962

Signed for £30,000 from Tranmere, he replaced Mark Higgins and was a regular goal threat from the back.

PETER REID

Central midfield 234 apps, 13 goals 1982- 1989

Born: Huyton, June 20 1956

Bought from Bolton for £60,000 in 1982 a year after much larger fee had been mooted, Howard Kendall hails Reid, capped 13 times for England, as Everton’s most important post-war signing. Voted PFA Player of the Year in 1985 he later managed several clubs and is now in charge of the Thailand national team.
