AN ANNOUNCEMENT is expected either today or tomorrow on whether the government intends to "call in" plans for Everton FC’s proposed new Kirkby stadium.
Baroness Andrews, the Parliamentary under- secretary of state for communities and local govern- ment, is widely expected to make the announcement before Parliament goes into recess on Wednesday.
A call-in could have massive ramifications for the £400m Tesco-led scheme, as delays would significantly alter the financial basis, and even spell the end for the whole project.
Everton FC spokesman Ian Ross said: "We have no idea one way or the other which way it’s going to go."
Meanwhile, more than 20% of Everton FC’s shareholders are demanding an Emergency General Meeting over the proposed move to Kirkby.
Third-generation fan and minor shareholder Mark Grayson, a quantity surveyor who has been leading the push for an EGM, said it should go ahead regardless of the Government’s decision.
He said: "The club now have 21 days to confirm the date of the EGM. It should be within a further 28 days of that notice.
