Everton Kirkby inquiry: Doubt over stadium plans 'driving investors away'

EFC Stadium, design, Kirkby

Tesco and Everton argue that Kirkby needs massive regeneration and that the developers would certainly bring it about. This is the most important point, they have stated, in the whole inquiry.

Mr Nutter agreed that Kirkby would benefit, but added: “But the implications beyond that concern me.”

He said that plans he had tested in St Helens and Skelmersdale would be in keeping with existing town centres.

But the large scale shopping element of the plans for Kirkby, he said, would draw retailers away from other town centres, in turn ruining their chances of regeneration.

He told the inspector that the development would be out of scale and not in keeping with Kirkby.

Tesco and Everton’s witnesses have provided complex financial evidence they say contradicts this view over the last five weeks of the inquiry.
