Sunday’s 3-1 defeat of Sunderland moved the Anfield outfit back up to second place
Sunday’s comprehensive 3-1 defeat of rock-bottom Sunderland moved the Anfield outfit back up to second place in the embryonic Premier League table.
Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea had all dropped points the previous day, giving Liverpool the opportunity to capitalise on making up ground lost by the previous week’s home defeat to Southampton.
And Rodgers wants his players to ensure they make the most of any such future openings.
“We stressed that before – that was an incentive going into the game,” said the Liverpool manager.
“You have to look to dominate those situations if any of your rivals slip up. It’s the mark of a good team when you can go and put in a good performance and win.
“That’s what we’ve done. Sunderland put a great effort into the game but our quality shone through in the end and it is three valuable points for us.
“The result and parts of the performance were exceptionally pleasing. We defended very well, we looked a real threat a number of times on the counter-attack.
“We can be better when we win the ball back, on our first pass, to keep the ball for longer periods. That’s an element of our game that we must improve on.”
Goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, who made his first return to Wearside since joining Liverpool in the summer for £9million, concurs with his manager.
“It was very important for us to get the three points,” he said.
“You have to do your job yourself otherwise those other results aren’t important.
“Now we have to keep it going and look forward to the game next week against Crystal Palace.”
Luis Suarez netted two goals on his first Premier League outing since April while Daniel Sturridge took his tally to seven goals for the campaign at Sunderland.
It prompted Rodgers to declare there is no better striker partnership in the top-flight, and Mignolet added: “Everybody has seen that they have got goals in them.
“They are a very good striking force; they have scored lots of goals and helped us win points. Hopefully we can keep that going.”
