Manager delighted with goalkeeper's form
Everton FC boss Roberto Martinez has praised Tim Howard's response to the summer signing of Joel Robles.
The Everton boss made Atletico Madrid’s Robles one of his first acquisitions after replacing David Moyes in the summer.
But the 23-year-old Spanish stopper has been restricted to just two appearances in the Captial One Cup this season with Howard delivering consistent displays as Everton’s number one.
And the American, who has kept four clean sheets this campaign, produced a man-of-the-match display at Aston Villa on Saturday as his first-half heroics kept the Blues in the game.
“Tim has been faultless since the start of the season,” said Martinez.
“It is important in every position that you have good competition for places and have options.
“Joel Robles, who won the FA Cup last season, is going to bring that threat but I thought Tim Howard showed on Saturday just what a magnificent moment of form he is enjoying.
“And what a magnificent goalkeeper he is.
“I can really say that I’ve not seen him do anything that has not been of the highest, highest level so I am really pleased in the competition we have in that position.”
Everton improved in the second-half at Villa Park and secured the win thanks to goals from Romelu Lukaku and Leon Osman.
Victory kept the Blues within four points of Premier League leaders Arsenal and Martinez is delighted with their start to the season.
But the Everton manager still reflects on their opening three games with frustration.
“Looking back now at the start of the season we were very disappointed with the three draws we had,” Martinez said. “The points tally is a very good one, the performances have been very, very good and what I have really be impressed with is the attitude and focus of the players.
“They are a really strong unit who have been successful over the years and for me, it was important to keep that.
“But they have also opened up to doing things in a different way and that has been impressive.”
