Old picture shows the striker always cut an imposing figure
Romelu Lukaku has been standing out for Everton this season - and as this picture shows, that has always been the case.
This picture went viral on the internet yesterday – after a Belgian journalist posted a picture of a 10-year-old Romelu Lukaku, standing head and shoulders above everyone else on the pitch.
The on-loan Blues striker played at Lierse from 2003 to 2006 and the photo was taken when his side were playing against Dutch outfit Feyenoord.
A decade later Lukaku is firing in goals for Everton and Belgium – and on Friday scored the goals which clinched his country’s place at next summer’s World Cup finals in Brazil.
Lukaku revealed he had been inundated with messages of congratulations after his two goals against Croatia secured World Cup qualification with a game to spare – including one from his Everton boss Roberto Martinez.
“It’s not stopped,”Lukaku told Belgian journalists. “Calls, messages, e-mails, social networks.
“In total I’ve still got 40 messages unread from Friday.
“I’m going to try and respond to all of them but it’s not easy to find the time.
“After returning from Croatia, we all had a drink together to celebrate.
“Then we slept and then there’s been time spent with our families.”
“Roberto Martinez, my coach at Everton, called me and said I am doing well in my development.
“Though personally I think I can be even better.
“The road is long. I really want to reach my maximum.”
Belgium entertain Wales tonight in their final World Cup Group A fixture.
Chris Coleman’s men will be looking to end their campaign on a positive note, after beating Macedonia 1-0 on Friday to record their third win in 10 qualification matches.
