Aintree Grand National: We want women dressed for races, not nightclubs

LADIES Day is finally here and Aintree’s style gurus have warned racegoers they don’t want to see wannabe Wags or flesh covered head to toe in orange fake tan.

Vicky Collins, one of the organisers of the Style 2009 contest, said with the number of pre-entries already breaking the contest’s record – women have a lot to do today if they want to impress the judges.

She said Ladies Day had already started with the emphasis on style now starting on Thursday, and more women than ever choosing to dress up for all three days.

She said: “Our style spotters photographed more than 400 women yesterday, and we already have 700 pre-entrants who want to take part in our Ladies Day catwalk show.

“Jeff Banks has been really impressed by what he saw on the opening day and he’s excited about what he’s going to see today.”

International fashion designer Banks will head up today’s panel of judges alongside Nicky Hambleton-Jones, Sheree Murphy and Justine Mills, from Cricket.

One lucky winner will be handed the keys to a new Citroen car, a holiday and a modelling stint with Matalan.

Ms Collins said: “We’re loving the one-shoulder look and bold colours, because they’re both very much on trend.

“We don’t want to see wanabe Wags, lots of fake tan or lots of bare flesh. We want women to dress for the races, not for clubbing.

“We want to see a comfortable style and don’t be afraid to wear a cardigan or jacket. Many women will come in dresses and the weather helps, but pashminas and cardigans can easily be taken off and won’t spoil a look.

“We’ve seen fewer hats over the years, last year there were more flowers in the hair and fascinators.”

Last year’s winner, Anna Perez, was chosen for her spring elegance. She wore a floral summer dress, natural looking make-up, and a single yellow flower in her hair.
