DAVID CAMERON cited the result of the Grand National as he urged voters to reject “undemocratic” and “unfair” proposed changes to the Westminster voting system.
The Prime Minister warned that candidates who come second or third under the alternative vote system could end up winning.
In a speech to Tory supporters in Sale, Manchester, he urged voters to reject AV – where candidates are ranked in order of preference – and retain the first-past-the-post system in the May 5 referendum.
He said: “Now, along with millions, I watched the Grand National on Saturday. Imagine how we would all feel if Ballabriggs and exultant jockey Jason Maguire arrived at the winners’ enclosure to find that the horse that came third was taking the first prize.
“If it’s not good enough for Aintree, then it is not good enough for politics, and we have got to get out there and win this referendum.”
