Monet’s set for Kauto clash

NICKY RICHARDS is happy to take on Kauto Star with Monet’s Garden at level weights at Ascot this Saturday.

The Cheltenham Gold Cup winner’s only defeat in the past two seasons was by Monet’s Garden in the Old Roan Chase at Aintree in October and the two were among the 14 declarations for Saturday’s Commercial First Ascot Chase.

Richards’ 10-year-old grey won this race 12 months ago, but it has been extended by two furlongs to 2m5½f.

Monet’s Garden received 14lb when defeating Kauto Star at Aintree but faces him off level weights in Saturday’s Grade One event. Richards said: “It is great for the sponsors that they are going to have a few runners. But we’ll see as the week wears on, when they keep looking at Kauto a few might start to get cold feet!

“Anyway, we are going to have a go.”
