Options open for Bailey’s chaser

KIM BAILEY is keeping his options open for Longshanks, if he once again misses the cut for the John Smith’s Grand National.

Longshanks failed to make the final 40 twice, but was a creditable seventh behind Silver Birch 12 months ago in the 4m4f marathon.

The 11-year-old has not run since and has been a difficult horse to get right due to a number of niggling injuries. He has 10st6lb for next week’s Aintree marathon but still needs around 20 to drop out to get a run.

Bailey said: “He’s still on course for the National but I don’t think he’ll get in. He had feet problems which meant he came into training very late but he’s creeping along and had a racecourse gallop at Exeter the other day. He’s also been entered in the Topham Chase and the Scottish National so I suppose he would run in one or the other, but we’re very much in the lap of the gods as to where he goes.”
