McCoy waits on National decision

TONY McCOY will wait to decide which of his boss JP McManus’s four entries he partners in Saturday’s John Smith’s Grand National.

The 13-time champion jockey has yet to win the race in 13 attempts and has the choice of partnering Butler’s Cabin, L’Ami, Reveillez or Can’t Buy Time.

The Irishman was on board Butler’s Cabin last year when he fell at Becher’s Brook second time round. The Jonjo O’Neill-trained nine-year-old is currently the 10-1 second favourite with Ladbrokes, William Hill, Stan James, Victor Chandler and bet365 for the Aintree showpiece.

But McManus’s racing manager Frank Berry confirmed there was no rush on McCoy to make a decision. He said: “There is no pressure for Tony to make up his mind, because we have jockeys ready for the other horses.

“I’m sure he will wait to see what the ground is on Thursday morning.”

On Butler’s Cabin, Berry added: “Butler’s Cabin jumped well for a long way last year and has come back and run a good race in the Kim Muir at Cheltenham.

“He’s a bit higher in the weights this year but he has come out of his last race well – and you would have to be pleased with him.”

Meanwhile, Aintree expect the meeting to start on good ground.

Conditions on the Mildmay course are currently good, while the Grand National course is good, good to soft in places. It is expected to be mostly dry for the rest of the week.

Clerk of the course Andrew Tulloch said: “The course has just dried out a bit so we watered the Mildmay course on Monday and we have just started watering the Grand National course

“It’s due to be getting warmer on Thursday, up to around 16 degrees. While on Friday it could be 18 degree sunshine.

“I hope for the National we will be looking at good ground.”
