John Smith’s Grand National in 2011 is the long-term aim of Donald McCain’s Catterick winner Youngstown, says part-owner John Glews

PART-OWNER John Glews is hoping Youngstown can fulfil his long-term John Smith’s Grand National aim after his latest victory at Catterick.

Glews sponsors Donald McCain’s yard and Youngstown is one of his many horses at Bankhouse stables.

The six-year-old landed his second win in three starts over fences in the catterickbridge.co.uk Handicap Chase. It was part of a 48-1 treble for jockey Jason Maguire, and a double for McCain. The duo also scored with Jim Tango, in the Red Rum colours now owned by the trainer’s mother Beryl.

But Glews is hoping Youngstown may be good enough for the 2011 Grand National. He said: “I was brought up in the Red Rum era. The first National I saw was in 1970 when Gay Trip won, and it has been a dream ever since to have a National horse. That is why we are with the McCains. Youngstown could be the one, not this season but next season.”

TODAY’S NAP: Peddlers Cross (1.45pm Bangor).
