Ruby Walsh dreaming of helping create history on Kauto Star in King George VI Chase at Kempton

RUBY WALSH’S mind will be on Kauto Star on Christmas Day as he looks to be part of history on Boxing Day.

Desert Orchid won the William Hill King George VI Chase four times between 1986 and 1990, but if Kauto Star can land the Kempton Christmas feature he would be the first horse to land four in a row.

Walsh has ridden Kauto Star to his victories in the past three seasons, even recovering from the removal of his spleen 12 months ago to make the contest

The 30-year-old became a father for the first time and will spend tomorrow with his family and daughter Isabelle.

But his mind will also be Kempton.

Walsh said: “I’m always nervous about the weather at this time of year but there is not a lot you can do about it and Kempton are on top of things.

“Christmas for me is always about racing and Kauto doing the business at the King George at Kempton. I open my presents on Christmas Day but the only one I really care about is the Christmas present I may or may not receive come Boxing Day afternoon, it’s all I can think about.”

Officials at Kempton have been printing off cricket-style Kauto ‘4’ cards to be waved by the Boxing Day faithful should he triumph and his trainer Paul Nicholls is confident the nine-year-old will be able to make history.

Nicholls said: “Kauto is in great form and schooled very well this morning, it is all systems go and there really are no excuses.

“He looks great and has come on a ton for Haydock. The idea was that race was always going to mentally sharpen him up.

“He has been in training a long time and a run just changes them. He looks better and is sharper and I couldn’t be happier with him at the moment.”

BOXING DAY NAP: Pretty Star (2.10pm Wetherby). If meeting called off Empty Sky (3.15pm Market Rasen).
