Sheikh Hamdan’s Arcano set to bypass StanJames.com 2,000 Guineas and head for other options

ARCANO will miss the StanJames.com 2000 Guineas following his defeat at Newbury on Saturday.

Brian Meehan’s colt was unbeaten before Saturday’s Greenham Stakes. He had won the Group One Prix Morny last season but he was well beaten behind the Richard Hannon-trained pair, Dick Turpin and Canford Cliffs, at Newbury.

Connections are now looking at other options in Ireland and France for the Oasis Dream colt.

Owner Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum’s racing manager Angus Gold said: “He won’t run in the English Guineas and we’ll give him a bit longer. The Greenham came a bit quick for him and also he had a rushed preparation. He’ll either go for the Irish and the French Guineas or we may even wait until Ascot in June. He didn’t run much of a race and Sheikh Hamdan said to give him more time.”

Sheikh Hamdan still Mark Johnston’s Awzaan, another unbeaten two-year-old, for the Colts’ Classic, for which he is a best-priced 9-1 with Coral and totesport.

Gold added: “I spoke to Mark this morning and he is very happy with the horse and everything seems to be going well. The fact we also had Awzaan had no bearing on the Arcano decision.

“I think Arcano needed it mentally more than physically.”

Sheikh Hamdan’s Habaayib – beaten a neck to Puff at Newbury on Saturday – may also head to Newmarket for the 1,000 Guineas. Gold said: “I thought she ran a great race and we are going to leave her in the Guineas. We’ve also got Tabassum and Rumoush, but we’ve always thought Habaayib was a nice filly.”
