Martin Dwyer eyeing French Derby with Brian Meehan’s Dancing David

MERSEYSIDE jockey Martin Dwyer won’t be able to add to his British Classic haul this weekend. But he heads to France on Sunday eyeing a first win the French Derby.

Dwyer will partner Brian Meehan’s Dancing David in the Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly and is hopeful the three-year-old can go well.

The 34-year-old Liverpool-born rider has won two Classics. He landed the Oaks on Andrew Balding’s Casual Look in 2003 and then took the Derby in 2006, snatching victory on the line aboard the Marcus Tregoning-trained Sir Percy.

He has an excellent Classic record on British soil.

He has also finished second (Peeping Fawn) and third (Shadow Dancing) in the Oaks, runner-up in the St Leger (High Accolade) and filled the same position in the 2,000 Guineas aboard Sir Percy before his Epsom triumph.

He has also won the German Guineas, but has yet to taste glory on French soil – although he has had limited opportunities down the years.

Dancing David is one of several British and Irish raiders. The Danehill Dancer colt has been consistent without getting his head in front too often.

He has only won once in five outings, and so far this season has been runner-up twice. He finished second to Elusive Pimpernel, who will be one of his rivals at Chantilly at Newmarket. While he was also just behind John Gosden’s Investec Derby hope Azmeel last time in the Dee Stakes at Chester.

Dwyer is hopeful he again get in the frame at least in France and believes he is improving all the time.
