GLORIOUS GOODWOOD DAY TWO PREVIEW: Richard Hannon hoping Canford Cliffs can land Group One hat-trick in Sussex Stakes

CANFORD CLIFFS looks to cement his reputation as this season’s top miler with a third Group One victory in the BGC Sussex Stakes (3.25pm).

Trainer Richard Hannon is feeling the pressure of saddling the odds-on favourite for the Group One contest at Glorious Goodwood, but he expects the Tagula colt to confirm punters’ faith.

Canford Cliffs secured back-to-back Group One successes in the Irish 2,000 and the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot and is ready for his hat-trick bid under Richard Hughes.

Hannon said: “Reel Buddy was a 50-1 chance when he won this race in 2003, but Canford Cliffs is odds-on, so the pressure is that much greater.

“However, he has done everything right at home since Royal Ascot, and I must say that he looks magnificent.

“He has improved physically – he is bigger and stronger, and we don’t see the Goodwood undulations being a problem as he settles so much better than at Newmarket on Guineas day.

“He hadn’t really come to himself then, but now he is at the top of his game, and, while ideally they will go a good gallop at it would help him relax, if they do go slow as Hughesie says there is not a colt in Europe who can quicken like he can.”

Hannon also has chances to add to yesterday’s opening-double with Zebedee and Martyr. Juveniles King Torus (2.45pm) and Yashila (4.35pm) have good chances of making it another big day for the Newmarket trainer.
