Richard Hughes has glorious week but Paul Hanagan still leads race for jockey’s title after another winner at Chester

THE three main protagonists in the jockey’s title race continue to fire in the winners.

The past week has clearly belonged to Richard Hughes, who has a glorious week at Goodwood with a record-breaking total of nine winners over the five days.

He moved into second place on Saturday after clocking up his 100th winner of the season with Eucharist’s win the Play Poker At Gcasino.com Nursery. It helped the Richard Hannon stable jockey win the Racing UK-sponsored leading rider award at Glorious Goodwood – beating the previous best of eight winners shared by Lester Piggott, Kieren Fallon and Johnny Murtagh.

All nine wins were on board on Hannon-trained horses, who is Hughes' father-in-law.

Hannon himself broke the record the six wins achieved at the meeting by trainer Sir Michael Stoute in 1989.

Hughes said: “It has been a fabulous week and things have just gone from strength to strength. When you are enjoying your rides there is nothing better. Someone said it has been the Richard Hughes week – I like the sound of that. It has been a pleasure and Goodwood has been absolutely fantastic.”

But Warrington jockey Paul Hanagan continues to lead and he had his 112th winner of a remarkable season when partnering the Kevin Ryan-trained Masamah, who is owned by Merseyside-based businessman Dr Marwan Koukash, to victory in freebets.co.uk Queensferry Stakes at Chester yesterday.

Not to be outdone reining champion Ryan Moore brought home his 99th winner aboard the Gerard Butler-trained Dubai Bounty in the finale at Chester’s Family Fun Day.
