Nigel Twiston-Davies hoping his three-pronged attack on the totesport.com Grand National Trial at Haydock pays off

NIGEL TWISTON-DAVIES is looking forward to his three-pronged attack on tomorrow’s totesport.com Grand National Trial at Haydock.

Major Malarkey, who won at Newbury on his latest start, appears the number one stable hope and he is currently a 12-1 chance with the sponsors, William Hill and Skybet.

But the Naunton handler thinks all three of entries have a chance of landing the Grade Three feature on Haydock’s seven-race card.

Ballyfitz, who was fourth in the Welsh National fourth, is a 25-1 chance for tomorrow, while Jaunty Journey is the outsider at 33-1 with Coral and Sportingbet.

On Major Malarkey Twiston-Davies said: “He’s in good form and won well at Newbury last time. He’s stepping up in trip but it shouldn’t by a worry to him.

“He’s in the four-miler (National Hunt Chase) at Cheltenham and all going well on Saturday the plan would be for him to go for that.

“Ballyfitz ran well in the Welsh National and did really well at Ffos Las last time. He’s got blinkers on for the first time on Saturday, so hopefully that might help him. He’s come down the ratings as well and he should run a very good race.

“Jaunty Journey is good on soft ground as well and enjoys long distances. I think all three of them have excellent prospects.”

There were 14 runners declared at yesteday’s final declaration stage with Alan King’s West End Rocker, who won Warwick’s Classic Chase last month, currently the 5-1 favourite with most firms.

Malcolm Jefferson’s King Fontaine will bid for a third succesive win at the Merseyside track.

Lucinda Russell’s top-weight Silver By Nature will bid to win the race for a second succesive year. He is one of several horses bidding to enhance their Grand National claims. Other interesting contenders are Carruthers, Sarde, Mobaasher, Le Beau Bai and Nicto De Beauchene.
