Champion Flat jockey Paul Hanagan returns to the saddle at Wolverhampton

CHAMPION jockey Paul Hanagan is set to return to action this afternoon at Wolverhampton.

The 30-year-old Warrington rider has five rides at the Midlands track and starts aboard Sharp Shoes in the ATRCasinoClub.com Selling Stakes.

Of his other four rides he will partner Coolminx for his boss Richard Fahey in the Play Roulette At ladbrokes.com Handicap.

Malton-based Hanagan landed his first jockeys’ crown on the final day of the season at Doncaster on November 6, finishing with 191 winners, two ahead of nearest pursuer Richard Hughes.

Hanagan said: “I’ve wintered really well.

“I wouldn’t normally take such a long time off but I really needed it after everything that happened.

“I literally had nothing left last year and it was really important to freshen up for the new season. It’s been a great break, though, and I’m ready to go again.”

BBC Radio Merseyside’s John Morris hosts a Cheltenham preview evening on Monday, March 7 at Maghull Town Hall, starting at 7.45pm. The panel includes Morris, John Parrott, Ken Pitterson and Matt Williams. A donation to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital will be made from the proceeds.
