FRED DONE AT CHELTENHAM: Big Buck’s hat-trick can guarantee big pay-out on St Patrick’s Day

IT’S Day Three of the Greatest Show on Turf and on St Patrick’s Day punters will be looking to pay for their Guinness with Big Buck’s.

The drinks could well be on me because the Paul Nicholls-trained champion stayer has an outstanding chance in the feature race of the day, the World Hurdle.

Unbeaten in all of his 10 starts over hurdles including the last two runnings of this race, Big Buck’s is bidding to emulate Inglis Drever’s haul of three championships.

Big Buck’s has speed and stamina in abundance and there is only one horse that can stop a monster pay-out and that is Grand Crus.

The Martin Pipe-trained horse has done nothing wrong and has looked a superstar but he’s never come up against anything like Big Buck’s

In the Ryanair Poquelin will have an outstanding chance especially after Riverside Theatre and Tranquil Sea were not declared.

The Paul Nicholls-trained horse has won on four of his eight outings over fences at Cheltenham with his latest success coming in a handicap Chase in December where he outstayed Great Endeavour to win by a length.

The new course at Prestbury Park probably suits him better and last year he finished runner-up to Albertas Run.

Beware of Albertas Run, disappointing this season but has AP McCoy on board.

As for the second day of the Festival it was a grey start for me after pushing Chicago Grey to 6/1 for Gordon Elliot to have his first winner of the festival.

First Lieutenant was costly but I did dodge two big bullets with Time For Rupert, many people’s festival banker, and Master Minded both failing to live up to expectations.

They were both price pushes and they would have cost me a lot of dough.

Enjoy St Patrick's Day.
