THE ups and downs of the Cheltenham Festival were illustrated in Bostons Angel’s victory in the RSA Chase yesterday.
Jessica Harrington, who tasted Festival success with the brilliant dual winner of the Queen Mother Champion Chase Moscow Flyer, secured another Grade One success with Bostons Angel’s triumph.
It could easily have been a double for the County Kildare handler. Oscars Well led in the Neptune Novices’ Hurdle but almost came down at the last and could only finish fourth. But Bostons Angel made up for that.
Harrington, though, wondering why her seven-year-old, already a winner of two Grade Ones in Ireland, was sent off at a massive 16-1 under Robbie Power.
Warm 7-4 favourite Time For Rupert rarely threatened and could only finish fifth. It was later revealed he had coughed after the race and scoped badly.
But the race was all about Bostons Angel, who won by a neck from Jessies Dream, with Wayward Prince another three-quarters of a length away under Tony McCoy.
Harrington said: “I nearly jumped out of the stand to push him up the hill!
“He just feels like he’s done enough when he hits the front and he’s never going to win by very far.
“This will always be a special day for us because of Moscow and while we were obviously disappointed with what happened to Oscars Well, to have a winner is great. Fairyhouse and Punchestown are possibles, but he’s now won three Grade Ones and he might have a holiday.”
