ASCOT is a place that holds fond memories for Liverpool jockey Martin Dwyer.
But after a few years when winners have been hard to come by at the Royal meeting for the 35-year-old rider, he is hoping he can add to his five past successes.
The dual Classic-winning jockey is no stranger to landing the biggest races on the calendar, having won the Derby on Sir Percy in 2006 and the Oaks on Casual Look three years earlier.
Royal Ascot has also been a happy hunting ground with five wins aboard Zargus and Dominica (2002), Sindapour and High Accolade (2003) and Drawnfromthepast (2007).
But it is four years since that last victory in the Windsor Castle Stakes, with injury and the lack of the right quality of horse preventing more glory at the premier Flat meeting.
This year, though, he is hoping it will be different.
Dwyer said: “It is really hard to have winners at Ascot, but for the first time in a couple of years I am going there with live chances.
“It is the worse place to go when you are on horses who aren’t good enough.
“All these big Festivals like Epsom and Goodwood are like that.
“You want to be going there with horses who have a big chance of winning.”
As well as some other lively outside hopes, he feels he has two big chances this year at the Brian Meehan-trained pair of Shumoos and Theyskens’ Theory.
Shumoos is favourite for today’s Queen Mary Stakes (5pm) after a smooth debut success at Haydock last month. While stable-mate Theyskens’ Theory bids for glory in Friday’s Group One Coronation Stakes after a similarly comfortable seasonal return.
Dwyer said: “Wednesday and Friday are my best chances. Shumoos looks to hold a massive chance.
“She hacked up at Haydock and I think she has got a great chance of a winner. With a bit of luck I think she will win.
“Theyskens’ Theory is a lovely horse.
“She is working well. She has a nice easy comeback run at York and won well.
“She is stepping back up to Group One company.
“She has already proven herself in that, she was third last year in a Group One.
“She is in good health and she has got a great chance.”
