Paul Hanagan hoping to get off the mark at Royal Ascot after two blank days

PAUL HANAGAN has drawn a blank at Royal Ascot so far but he is hoping to change that today.

The champion jockey from Warrington has had a winner at the last two meetings, but goes into today’s third day yet to strike. But he feels he has some good chances of adding to his previous Royal Ascot wins with Cosmic Sun (in 2009) and Marine Commando last year.

The 30-year-old will partner Lucy Wadham’s Dorcas Lane in this afternoon’s Ribblesdale Stakes, one of four rides today. While tomorrow the Richard Fahey-trained trio of Lily’s Angel, Glen’s Diamond and Barefoot Lady all have chances.

Hanagan won the Listed Pretty Polly Stakes aboard Wadham’s Norse Dancer filly.

And although she steps up in trip to 1m4f and to Group Two company, Hanagan is hopeful she can make her presence felt. He said: “I won a Listed race at Newmarket on her. She will get the trip well and she is a really nice horse.”

Tomorrow Glen’s Diamond will run in the King Edward VII Stakes after connections paid a supplementary entry fee.

The three-year-old was an impressive winner of the Dee Stakes at Chester’s May meeting. And Hanagan thinks he can benefit from the step up to 1m4f in the ‘Ascot Derby’. He said: “Glen’s Diamond will have a great chance. It was a brave shout and a lot of money to supplement him. But he is really good horse and he won well at Chester. I think he will run a really big race.”

Barefoot Lady was fifth in the QIPCO 1,000 Guineas before going down to a narrow defeat to Joviality in the Musidora Stakes. And Hanagan added: “Barefoot Lady was really unlucky not to win at York. She is a very tough filly and has been very consistent. She could run well. It is a tough race, but she won’t be disgraced and should go close.”
