Hannon plans next step for Rougemont

IMPRESSIVE Newmarket winner Rougemont will be stepped up to Group company for his next race after a striking win on his debut last week.

Richard Hannon’s Montjeu colt won by two lengths at 25-1 on the July course, suggesting it was something of a surprise, although the trainer has always held him in some regard. Owned by Julie Wood, who has been lucky enough to have the likes of Strong Suit and Zebedee in recent years, his next race could either be in the Vintage Stakes, the Solario or the Acomb.

“We always like to find a good one for Julie Wood, who is such a big supporter of ours, and hopefully we’ve got one in Rougemont,” said Hannon.

“He is by Montjeu, so we always hoped that he might be a bit special, but though he had worked well, we did not expect him to win so well as he did first time out at Newmarket.

“Obviously, we will now be thumbing through the Pattern-race book, and while the Dewhurst and Racing Post Trophy could be on the agenda later on, we will take it one step at a time, and races like the Vintage at Goodwood, Solario at Sandown and Acomb at York could all come into the equation.”

Meanwhile, Fiorente could be back in action in the next few weeks following his fine run at Royal Ascot.

The Betfair Gordon Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on July 26 and the sportingbet.com Great Voltigeur Stakes at York on August 17 are among the options for the Sir Michael Stoute-trained colt.

Fiorente was touted as a possible for the Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster in September.

“I believe he’s fine. I don’t know about plans yet as I haven’t spoken to the trainer about it, but he has plenty of options coming up anyway. We will just have to see,” said manager Peter Reynolds.

“There are options like the Voltigeur at York and the Gordon at Goodwood. I expect the trainer will be making his mind up fairly soon on that.”
