Light in the dark over Haydock run as Workforce makes progress with injury

HUNTER’S LIGHT is likely to be dropped in trip after his creditable effort in defeat in the Gordon Stakes at Goodwood last week.

The Saeed bin Suroor-trained colt had previously won a Listed race at Hamilton over a mile and three furlongs and stepped up to a mile and a half, he was outstayed by Namibian and Fiorente, two of the favourites for the St Leger.

He holds an entry in the Rose Of Lancaster Stakes at Haydock this weekend but is more likely to wait for the Prix Guillaume D’Ornano at Deauville on August 15.

“He’s won a Listed race already but we’ve no firm plans for him,” said Bin Suroor.

“He’s entered in a few races abroad and he’s in at Haydock this weekend, but we’ll keep all options open and see how he is.

“There is a race for him at Deauville over 10 furlongs, a Group Two, that we might look at, but he has many different options.”

Meanwhile, Workforce is “progressing well” as connections build towards the defence of his crown in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp in October.

Last year’s Derby and Arc hero was hot favourite for the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot last month, but finished second to Nathaniel after hanging violently in the straight.

Connections later reported the four-year-old to be lame after he was struck into by the fatally injured Rewilding.

But Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to owner Khalid Abdullah, says his injuries are not as severe as first feared.

“He’s progressing well and we’ve found nothing particularly untoward with him. There are one or two bits and bobs, but nothing very major,” said Grimthorpe.

“We’ll carry on with him and we’ll just have to see how he goes before we make any plans.

“Obviously the aim would be the Arc.”
