IN THE week when Michael Jarvis lost his battle against cancer, Oojooba made sure his legacy will live on at Haydock.
Trained by Roger Varian, who was Jarvis’ assistant for many years, the juvenile is a daughter of Ameerat, who provided Jarvis with his first British Classic winner when she won the 1000 Guineas in 2001.
On his retirement in February, the much-loved handler nominated her victory at Newmarket as his fondest recollection of all in nearly 40 years as a trainer, and after the win of Oojooba (11-1) in the EBF MH Construction Maiden Fillies’ Stakes, her memory also looks like being preserved.
With Neil Callan stuck in traffic, Fergus Sweeney did the steering and said: “She’s a very nice filly, very professional and she went through the soft ground as if it was good. She was a nice spare to get.”
