RICHARD LEE believes both his two runners in this afternoon’s Coral Welsh National at Chepstow, Le Beau Bai and Heathcliff, will have to put up a career best.
But he is hopeful they can be competititve in the Chepstow showpiece,
Both are at bottom end of the handicap, but Le Beau Bai, a winner at Chepstow earlier this month, is a best-priced 10-1 fourth favourites with the sponsors, Victor Chandler and Boylesports.
Lee said: “I hope Le Beau Bai goes well.
“The ground will suit him, and he loves the track.
“He seems in great form, but it’s a very competitive race and he’ll need to run right to his best to figure.
“The same has to be said of Heathcliff, but I think he’ll run well. He’ll love the ground and we’ve had this race in mind for him for a long time – we weren’t sure if he’d get in, but he has so it’s fingers crossed.”
Evan Williams will be hoping for a home winner in Wales with recent Haydock scorer Cappa Bleu.
The nine-year-old made his first start after 20 months off the track a winning one at the Merseyside venue last month. But he will stepping up to today’s 3m5f trip for the first time.
Llancarfan handler Williams said: “It will be a very interesting race. He came out of the race well at Haydock.
“You’re worried about the bounce factor, the ground and lots of things, but at the end of the day it’s a race I’ve always had at the forefront of my mind after Haydock.
“As far as the trip is concerned, you never know until you run them, so I wouldn’t know if he truly stays it or not. We’ll find out tomorrow.”
Cappa Bleu is currently a best-priced 14-1 with most firms behind 6-1 favourite Giles Cross, who finished second in last season’s Welsh National to Synchronised.
TODAY’S NAP: Le Beau Bai (2.10pm Chepstow).
