Fields of Anfield Road Hillsborough tribute record hits Irish charts

THE song recorded to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough tragedy has hit the Irish charts.

The Fields of Anfield Road yesterday entered the Republic’s chart at number nine, after just a few days of sales.

Bosses at HMV decided to sell the track in their Irish stores, as the original lament is based on the traditional Fields of Athenry anthem.

The reworked version, song by ex-Cast vocalist John Power, won huge popularity in the UK where it reached a peak position of 14.

The song, which featured former Liverpool FC players and high-profile city musicians, has so far sold over 22,000 copies.

Now, Fields of Anfield Road is expected to achieve similarly impressive sales in typical Reds strongholds like Derry, Limerick and Dublin.

The track is still available in stores in the UK, but the song is likely to slowly fall in the charts, currently in position 17, as no further copies will be made.

The Picket's Phil Hayes, behind the project, said: “Liverpool has a massive following in Ireland, so I’m sure it will do very well.

“They say it’s the second most popular song in Ireland and we’re hoping it’s just as successful there as it was in the UK.”
