Reina grabbed Ibrahim Affelay's speculative effort at the second attempt, but Liverpool began to assume a measure of control as they started to ease off the long ball and play their way through midfield in search of the front two.

Bellamy, increasingly influential as he and Kuyt found the same wavelength, had a goal rightly disallowed for offside in the 28th minute after a fine pass from his strike partner, and moments later hit the inside of the post, although play had been brought back seconds earlier following an unlucky handball by the Welshman.

Zenden had PSV goalkeeper Gomes scrambling across his line to usher wide a 25-yard drive and Bellamy, whose pace constantly exposed centre-back Alex as at White Hart Lane while playing for Wales against Brazil last week, placed a shot on the turn into the arms of Gomes.

Aurelio then caught Kromkamp dawdling in possession and his instant pass sent Kuyt racing through down the inside right channel, but centre-back Carlos Salcido did just enough to track back and block the Liverpool man's shot.

PSV emerged for the second half the more determined, but it was Liverpool who fashioned the next opening with Pennant's low drive safely held by Gomes.

However, the home side should have gone ahead on 59 minutes when Edison Mendez's cute pass put Kone in behind Steve Finnan but, thankfully for Liverpool, the striker shot tamely at a grateful Reina.

Mendez crashed a venomous shot inches wide from 30 yards before Kuyt decided to take the initiative himself with a burst of pace and shot that flashed narrowly beyond Gomes's right-hand post.

Both Gerrard and Alonso were introduced during the final half-hour but it took Finnan's outstretched leg to prevent Jefferson Farfan from stealing the three points for PSV late on.

And the inside of the post saved PSV a minute from time when Gerrard, who hit the frame of the goal twice against Everton, hit a thunderous volley that beat Gomes but thumped against the woodwork and flew back into play.
