Liverpool Reserves cap season with trophy win

LIVERPOOL’S reserve side capped an excellent season with a superb display to trounce Aston Villa 3-0 at Anfield in the Barclays FA Premier Reserve League National Play-off Final last night.

Goals from Krisztian Nemeth, Jordy Brouwer and Lucas Lucas ensured that it was Liverpool captain Steven Darby lifted the trophy.

Nemeth put Liverpool in front after just 10 minutes, expertly placing the ball into the far corner after being teed up by Brouwer.

Nabil El Zhar went close twice from distance, while Brouwer was denied by Villa keeper Stuart Taylor after being well set up by El Zhar.

Villa had chances of their own, Chris Herd hit a shot against the post and Lowry had an effort cleared off the line by the hugely impressive Mikel San Jose.

It wasn’t to be Villa’s night, as Moustapha Salifou was also denied by the woodwork in the second half. Liverpool’s finishing was more clinical, and Brouwer made it 2-0 on 67 minutes with a cool finish at the Kop end after being played through by Nemeth.

Lucas wrapped things up with a fine goal less than ten minutes later, latching onto to Danny Pacheco’s pass and finding the bottom corner.

Pacheco could have added another following some superb play by fellow substitute Craig Lindfield on the right wing, but his close-range shot on the stretch ended up in the Kop.

Liverpool’s second string have now lifted two trophies this season, with a possibility of a third as they face Manchester United in the final of the Lancashire Senior Cup later this month.
