Winning habit can help Benitez blood youngsters

He said: “Andriy Voronin has been playing well for the whole season whether he’s been playing with Torres or Kuyt.

“I remember when we played Birmingham and everyone was criticising me because we used Kuyt and Voronin.

“The problem with Voronin is that we didn’t pay money for him so people aren’t sure but the key for us is to have good players on the pitch – it doesn’t matter what the value of the player in the market is.

“Everybody can now see that Voronin is a very good player with game intelligence and I think that he can play alongside Crouch, Torres and Kuyt.”

Benitez added: “We can start talking about Crouch because he played well the other day.

“If Torres doesn’t play we will starting about Torres.

“You need to understand that we have four strikers and all of them are good enough and they all give us different things.

“We have important games in a short time so I will need to use all of them.”

Although all strikers are ultimately judged on their scoring record, Benitez insists that he will continue to adopt a ‘horses for courses’ approach and explains how the differing attributes of his strikers offer him a range of options for varying situations.

He said: “All strikers like to score goals to give them confidence so they play better.

“Kuyt is a player who always will be there, his mentality is very strong. The others are maybe not as mentally strong but they have other qualities.

“Each player is different and the strikers need to score goals.

“Kuyt was working so hard and was arriving in the right positions (against Blackburn). The last three chances we had he was there but he was running and working hard for 75 minutes.

“Sometimes you bring on a player and he has an impact but it’s because the other player was doing his job and the opposition are tired.

“I’m sure if I’d have used Kuyt for 20 minutes and he’d had those three chances then he would have scored.

“When you’re playing away at Blackburn and have to work really hard then Kuyt is a solution.”

Benitez has now assembled on of the most in depth squads in the Premier League but if there is one area that could still be strengthened then many observers would like to see an extra body in defence.

The manager himself tried to acquire a player in this position during the summer but was thwarted in his battle to bring Argentinean Gabriel Heinze to Anfield and has revealed that he will consider fresh options in the New Year.

Benitez said: “I think that we have got a good squad but we’ve had some problems with defenders because we couldn’t sign Gabriel Heinze.

“We need to find solutions if we can and if we cannot then we’ll manage with the players that we’ve got because I’m happy with them. You know that we need something so we are working now (for a new defender in January) but we don’t like to say ‘this player’ or the other one or this position clearly but we need someone in defence.

“We have very good players and are happy with the squad but you always know you can improve and every year will be the same.”
