Ton-up Steven Gerrard hails man who scored his first Liverpool FC goal

Steven Gerrard celebrates

Steven Gerrard was delighted to complete his century of goals for Liverpool in front of the Kop - but was quick to praise the man scoring his very first goal in a red shirt.

The Anfield captain reached the 100 mark with a typically dynamic strike from 25 yards in the 76th minute of the 3-1 Champions League Group D win over PSV.

Dirk Kuyt had set Liverpool on their way to a comfortable win over the Duitch champions in just the fourth minute before Robbie Keane got on the scoresheet for the first time since his £20.3million move from Tottenham in the summer.

"It was the perfect way to get the 100th," Gerrard said. "And Robbie got his first as well, which was pleasing.

"I hadn't been thinking about it but obviously people talk about it a lot and then it starts getting on your mind. It's nice to get the 100th out of the way."

Gerrard says the players were never concerned about the length of time it took Keane to open his account given the quality of his overall performances.

The Irishman had gone 10 games without scoring, but Gerrard added: "His performances have been there but a lot of people have been talking about when the first goal was going to come. I don't think that helps - it can make you a bit more nervous.

"But you always know that when the quality is there, the goals will come, and that's what's happened."

Back to back wins in the opening group games add up to Liverpool's best Champions League start and they now top the group with six points alongside Atletico Madrid.

PSV and Marseille have yet to raise a point between them, but Gerrard refuses to take further progress for granted.

"The main point of the game was to build on the Everton result and keep winning, so we're very pleased to have another three points. It's a good start to the competition to get six points from two games," he said.

"But we're still not there – I think we'll need 10 points to get through. We still need a big performance away at Atletico in the next game and if we do that, we'll then have two home games and we'll be very confident."

Gerrard is delighted to report that he is now back to full fitness after starting the season with a nagging groin injury.

Ahead of Sunday's Premier League visit to Manchester City, Gerrard told the club's website: "I feel good. I've got three or four games under my belt now and I'm confident I'm approaching top form. I am happy with my last two performances and now I'll try to build on that for Sunday."
