DANIEL AGGER is ready to grab the chance to re-establish himself in the Liverpool first team following Martin Skrtel’s injury misery.
Scans yesterday revealed Skrtel damaged the posterior cruciate ligament damage in his right knee when falling awkwardly towards the end of the remarkable 3-2 win at Manchester City on Sunday.
The Slovakia international will see a specialist today to determine the length of his absence, with Liverpool fearing the centre-back could be ruled out for the remainder of the year.
Skrtel’s injury has opened the way for room-mate Agger, whose Anfield future has been the focus of intense speculation in recent weeks.
But the Denmark international said: “Of course I hope to get some playing time, but this is not exactly the way I wished to get it. I know Martin very well because I share a room with him when we travel.
“I hope to get my chance and then I will prove that it’s my place. On the other hand, it might as well be (Jamie) Carragher’s place because I don’t know why people only say it is me or Skrtel who are fighting each other for a place in the team.”
The form of Carragher and Skrtel had restricted Agger to just an appearance at Standard Liege in the Champions League and a goal-scoring outing in the Carling Cup at home to Crewe Alexandra.
It led to talk in Denmark that the 23-year-old was unhappy with Rafael Benitez and considering buying out his contract in the New Year under the Webster ruling.
Real Madrid have been tracking the centre-back, but Agger said: “I have had to be patient this season and wait for my chance, I know how things are.
