Steven Gerrard celebrates

40th minute v Crystal Palace 1-2 (Away, League Cup, October 25 2005): GERRARD’S 50th career goal couldn’t prevent Liverpool from crashing out of the League Cup at Selhurst Park. A long ball was headed forward by Gerrard for Morientes but defender Hudson intercepted. After the Palace defender slipped, Gerrard pounced to fire in a perfect finish low into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

84th minute (pen) v Aston Villa 2-0 (Away, Premier League, November 5 2005): SUBSTITUTE Peter Crouch was brought down by Liam Ridgewell and referee Steve Bennett gave Liverpool the chance to open the scoring. Gerrard stepped to fire home.

45th minute v Sunderland 2-0 (Away, Premier League, November 30 2005): ON the stroke of half-time Gerrard doubled Liverpool’s lead. Xabi Alonso slipped a delightful ball to his midfield colleague down the right-hand side and after Gerrard got in behind right-back Danny Collins he dinked the ball over the diving Alnwick, before tapping into an empty net.

14th minute v Newcastle 2-0 (Home, Premier League, December 26 2005): MICHAEL OWEN’S return to Anfield was a sad one. Gerrard rubbed salt into the wounds of his old mate when he opened the scoring. Peter Crouch laid off a cross from Garcia, a sublime first touch from Gerrard took the ball away from Taylor and he burst into the box before firing past Given.

18th minute v Everton 3-1 (Home, Premier League, December 28 2005): SCORING at Goodison is something Gerrard relishes and he scored Liverpool’s second. When Everton failed to properly clear a Liverpool free-kick, the ball eventually fell to Gerrard who unleashed a venomous drive from 20 yards.

67th minute (pen) v Bolton 2-2 (Away, Premier League, January 2 2006): LIVERPOOL missed out on a club record-equalling 11th straight victory, but Gerrard helped them to a hard-earned point. His burst into the box was halted by Joey O’Brien and the Liverpool captain picked himself to score from the spot.

15th minute v Luton 5-3 (Away, FA Cup, January 7 2006): WHILE this topsy-turvy tie will forever be remembered for Xabi Alonso’s first goal from the half-way line, Gerrard’s strike was another superb effort. After Peter Crouch and Djibril Cisse combined, the latter rolled the ball to Gerrard on the edge of the area who curled a brilliant shot into the far corner.

36th minute (pen) v Portsmouth 2-1 (Away, FA Cup, January 29 2006): GERRARD opened the scoring from the spot after his ball into the box struck Dejan Stefanovic’s hand.

62nd minute v Birmingham 1-1 (Home, Premier League, February 1 2006): THE fairytale return of Robbie Fowler was ruined by a linesman’s flag. Gerrard’s strike came after he exchanged passes with Fernando Morientes, whose return ball back from by-line was sidefooted first-time and was deflected in off Matthew Upson into the bottom corner.
