Goal by goal – the story of Gerrard’s Liverpool century from first to last

Steven Gerrard celebrates

63rd minute v Bolton 3-0 (Home, Premier League, January 1 2007): LIVERPOOL stretched their unbeaten home run to 27 matches with Gerrard firing in the second. Dirk Kuyt and Jermaine Pennant combined well and the Dutchman crossed for the incoming Gerrard to rattle a well-taken volley into the top corner from 16 yards.

68th minute v Arsenal 3-6 (Home, League Cup, January 9 2007): GERRARD’S goal was Liverpool’s 400th in the League Cup. It wasn’t celebrated too much on a miserable evening at Anfield. A thunderous volley into the top corner from Gabriel Paletta’s nod down deserved to be more than a consolation.

73rd minute v Sheff Utd 4-0 (Home, Premier League, February 24 2007): ANOTHER comfortable home win as Gerrard notched Liverpool’s third. Fowler helped debutant Javier Mascherano’s simple pass into the path of Gerrard who flicked the ball cleverly beyond Sheffield United substitute Chris Morgan and rattled home an angled drive.

27th minute v PSV Eindhoven 3-0 (Away, Champions League, April 3 2007): GERRARD eclipsed the Ian Rush’s record with his 15th goal in the European Cup to become Liverpool’s all-time leading goalscorer in the competition. From Steve Finnan’s run and pin-point cross on the right, Gerrard rose above team-mate Dirk Kuyt to head home 12 yards out.

58th minute v Middlesbrough 2-0 (Home, Premier League, April 18 2007): LIVERPOOL were struggling to break down Boro, until Gerrard fired just before the hour. The midfielder took a pass from former Boro boy Bolo Zenden before lashing in a 25-yard blockbuster.

65th minute (pen) v Middlesbrough 2-0 (Home, Premier League, April 18 2007): GERRARD’S second was a bit more straightforward as he sent Mark Schwarzer the wrong way from the penalty spot after referee Graham Poll ruled Andrew Davies had impeded Crouch.

87th minute v Aston Villa 2-1 (Away, Premier League, August 11 2007): LIVERPOOL had failed to make their dominance show and were heading for an opening-day 1-1 draw. But with three minutes left, Gerrard was fouled by Styllian Petrov around 25 yards from goal. Up stepped the skipper to curl a superb effort into the top corner and give Liverpool the points.

85th minute v Besiktas 1-2 (Away, Champions League, October 24 2007): GERRARD gave Liverpool hope of salvaging the game with five minutes to go. He headed home from 15 yards after Peter Crouch had challenged for the ball following a cross from Steve Finnan.

Seventh minute v Arsenal 1-1 (Home, Premier League, October 28 2007): ON his 400th appearance for Liverpool, Gerrard gave Liverpool the lead from a free-kick given when Cesc Fabregas had fouled Xabi Alonso on the edge of the area. John Arne Riise rolled the ball for Gerrard to blast through a gap in the wall vacated by Kuyt and Flamini.

66th minute v Cardiff 2-1 (Home, League Cup, October 31 2007): FOR once Gerrard was outdone in the spectacular goals stakes as young Moroccan Nabil El Zhar fired in from 30 yards. But the captain, though, did get the winner when he exchanged passes with Yossi Benayoun to slip the ball through the keeper’s legs.
