Goal by goal – the story of Gerrard’s Liverpool century from first to last

Steven Gerrard celebrates

90: 71st minute v Luton 5-0 (Home, FA Cup, January 15 2008): THE Liverpool captain completed the second hat-trick of his career – and the club’s first in the FA Cup since Stan Collymore’s treble against Rochdale in 1996. He fired in a magnificent swerving shot from 30 yards.

91: 89th minute (pen) v Sunderland 3-0 (Home, Premier League, February 2 2008): GERRARD sealed another comfortable win from the spot in the final minute after Jermaine Pennant had been upended by Nyron Nosworthy.

92: 88th minute v Inter Milan 2-0 (Home, Champions League February 19 2008): GERRARD notched up his 50th goal at Anfield and it was another vital strike. With time running out, Gerrard fizzed in a superb low angled drive from 20 yards into the bottom corner and become the first Liverpool player to score in five successive European games in one season.

93: 83rd minute v West Ham 4-0 (Home, Premier League, March 5 2008): AFTER Fernando Torres has claimed a superb hat-trick Gerrard put the final nail in the Hammers’ coffin. Gerrard skipped through before hitting a superb 20-yard strike into the top corner.

94: 51st minute v Newcastle 3-0 (Home, Premier League, March 8 2008): GERRARD completed Liverpool’s comfortable 3-0 stroll. After the midfielder has played Fernando Torres through for the second at the start of the second half, the Spaniard returned the compliment. Gerrard won possession in midfield and from Torres, he bared down on the advancing keeper Steve Harper, before dinking it over him.

95: 86th minute (pen) v Arsenal 4-2 (Home, Champions League, April 4 2008): GERRARD had the chance from the spot to book Liverpool’s place in the semi-finals to face Chelsea for a third time. He made no mistake.

96: 60th minute v Blackburn Rovers 3-1 (Home, Premier League, April 11 2008): IN HIS 300th league game Gerrard broke the deadlock after a nice passing interchange. Yossi Benayoun won possession and fed Lucas, and after the Brazilian exchanged passes with Gerrard, the Liverpool skipper cut into the box and side-foot past his former Liverpool team-mate Brad Friedel.

97. 90th minute v Middlesbrough 2-1 (Home, Premier League, August 23 2008): THE first home game wasn’t going to plan with Liverpool 1-0 down to Middlesbrough with five minutes left. A rare deflected Jamie Carragher goal drew the scores level. But deep into injury time Xabi Alonso’s ball into the box was only partially cleared and Gerrard pounced to crash an angled drive into the top corner.

98: 26th minute v Marseille 2-1 (Away, Champions League, September 16 2009): LIVERPOOL are behind 1-0 in Europe. Cue Gerrard to meet Dirk Kuyt’s pass inside with a wonderful curling right-footed lob from 25 yards.

99. 32nd minute (pen) v Marseille 2-1 (Away, Champions League, September 16 2009): FIVE minutes after his first in the Stade Velodrome, Gerrard scores from the penalty spot after Ryan Babel is upended. He fires in off the keeper’s left-hand post, but the kick is ordered to be retaken because of encroachment. But he puts his second effort in an almost identical position.

100: 76th minute v PSV Eindhoven 3-1 (Home, Champions League, October 1 2008): AFTER referee Andre Marriner had denied Gerrard a perfectly good 100th goal against Stoke, Gerrard’s wait for the century ended fittingly in Europe – his 28th of Continental combat – at the Kop end.

Fabio Aurelio slipped a free-kick into his path and Gerrard arrowed home a fierce rising shot as he has done on so many European nights.
