LIVERPOOL were knocked off the top of the Premier League with a last-gasp defeat to bottom club Tottenham as they suffered their first loss of the season.
Rafael Benitez’s side were left to rue hitting the Londoners’ woodwork on three occasions when leading 1-0 and Chelsea’s 5-0 thrashing of Sunderland ensures Luiz Felipe Scolari’s men return to the summit.
Dirk Kuyt stunned White Hart Lane just two minutes in as he fired Liverpool into the lead.
The Dutchman was played in by a deft touch by former Spurs favourite Robbie Keane – who received a mixed reception from the home fans – and crashed the ball into the roof of Heurelho Gomes’s net from the right hand side of the area.
Liverpool almost doubled their lead just moments later when Darren Bent nearly netted a calamitous own goal, clumsily letting the ball slip through his legs from a Steven Gerrard corner-kick but he escaped as his unintentional effort hit the post.
Spurs rarely threatened in the first half and after the break, the visitors struck the woodwork on another couple of occasions.
Firstly, a Gerrard shot was deflected on to Gomes’s left-hand post by a Ledley King interception and then the Liverpool skipper struck the crossbar with a lofted effort after Keane had robbed possession from King when his Brazilian keeper had tried to pick him out with an under-hit pass.
Rafael Benitez’s side were made to pay for their missed opportunities on 70 minutes though when, at the same end Bent had nearly put into his own net earlier,
Jamie Carragher headed past Pepe Reina under pressure from King, direct from David Bentley’s right-hand corner.
Buoyed by their unlikely reprieve, Spurs won it in stoppage time as Reina could only parry a Bentley shot and fed by Bent, substitute Roman Pavlyuchenko netted.
