YOSSI BENAYOUN admits Liverpool will be driven by revenge when they aim to move a step nearer to Wembley tonight.
Rafael Benitez’s side travel to Tottenham Hotspur for their Carling Cup fourth round clash just 10 days after their unbeaten start to the season was ended at White Hart Lane.
An own goal from Jamie Carragher and Roman Pavlyuchenko’s injury-time winner earned the Londoners an unlikely 2-1 victory from a game the visitors dominated.
And Benayoun, a late substitute that evening, reveals Liverpool remain sore over the manner of that defeat and are now desperate to make amends.
“After what happened in the league game at Tottenham the other week, we especially want to get through to the next round on Wednesday,” said the Israel international.
“The Carling Cup is important to us. We want to win it. We want to win every game in every competition and go for all of the trophies.
“I think there’s a little bit of payback due for that late defeat. We had one of our best performances of the season at Tottenham and we somehow lost.
“We know we are the better team and we know that if we play to our level and play our game then we can win.
“But I’m a little bit surprised at how quickly Harry Redknapp has turned things around at Tottenham. It’s unbelievable really, he’s only been there a few days.
“He deserves all the credit, he’s a good manager and we wish him all the best – after Wednesday night though!”
Fernando Torres was absent for the trip to White Hart Lane earlier this month due to the hamstring problem that ultimately ruled him out for six games.
But the Spaniard, who made his comeback as a substitute in the 3-0 win over West Bromwich Albion this weekend, is in the squad tonight and is expected to start.
With tonight Liverpool’s eighth game in 25 days since the international break in
October, Benitez will shuffle his resources with former Tottenham forward Robbie Keane and skipper Steven Gerrard having not travelled.
And Benayoun is hopeful of making his second successive start after playing 90 minutes at the weekend.
“Any player wants to play all the time,” he said. “But we know this is Liverpool, one of the biggest and best squads in the Premier League. As an individual, you need to cope with it.
“Obviously, I want to play every game, I’m the same as everyone else. But now is not the time to be thinking about things on a personal level, we have to think of the team first and we’ve been doing well this season.”
Diego Cavalieri will replace Pepe Reina in goal with Ryan Babel, Sami Hyypia, Philipp Degen and youngsters Emiliano Insua, Damien Plessis and David Ngog all vying for a starting role, while reserve right-back Stephen Darby is also in the squad.
“It’s always difficult to play so many games in a row and you have to change some players depending on the competition,” said Benitez. “The majority of them can play games in a row but some need to be taken care of.
“Gerrard is one of them at this moment. Dirk Kuyt is another who has played almost every game. Xabi Alonso, Jamie Carragher and Robbie Keane are the same.
“You also have to consider that some of these players have played internationals this season too. I think Keane has played 23 games already. We will use players who haven’t played every game. I have confidence in them because they are almost all internationals.”
